Here's my rough concept. NaziThor. Thought he'd be a great ally to the Red Skull and a neat enemy to WWII Captain America.

This was my entry to the GameArtisans Sackboy 2 Challenge. The LittleBigPlanet style is wonderful in that it's endlessly adaptable. I picked Kroenen from Mike Mignola's Hellboy universe. He placed 5th overall, which isn't too bad. For lots of great entries, visit the link below.

This was my entry for the Pre Dominance War Challenge at gameartisans.org. My first painted, diffuse-only character. It was a lot of fun to go old school, and I learnt a lot. I'm quite happy with the result. Hugely inspired by the art of the Confrontation miniatures by Rackham.

Finally finished with him. Here's the beauty render, and a small description I put up at the contest thread:

'Urzog is an Uruk Hai berserker. He's a dangerous warrior and a formidable opponent. He's usually dispatched in the first wave of any attack. His temper and ferocity prevents him from attaining any position of authority. He can be seen from a distance since he doesn't bother with repairing broken or damaged armour. His scars reflect the battles he's been part of, as well as fights with fellow orcs. His warg proved unwieldy in battle, but received its just desserts at Urzog's dinner table.'

Another Uruk update!

Made a low res model, uved it and baked maps. Here's the result. On to texturing.

FYI, XNormal doesn't like objs with polypaint info from ZBrush. The most recent update says that's been fixed tho'.

There's a contest over at cghub.com where you have to make a bust. There are no rules to speak of, and the time given for completion is a generous one month, both of which I find daunting. There are too many good concepts to make. I thought I'd make something original for a change, maybe my interpretation of a literary figure. Edward Hyde was one option, and another was a dark take on the Pied Piper of Hamelin, which was inspired by the awesome 'Peter & Max: A Fables Novel'. I did a quick resculpt of Superman to get some ideas for Hyde (Hyde being uglier, was easier). Once I found something I liked, I did a paintover. This is the result. In hindsight, I should've quickly made a 3D cravat and jacket too.

This is a piece of facial animation that I tried on Hush, my guinea pig for many things. It's set to work in the Unreal engine, so it's a purely joint driven system. I made phonemes too, but this was the first test.

Here's an update on the girl. I've tweaked the maps so it looks a bit less splotchy. Also added some base textures for the clothing. Currently I'm working on doing the eyebrows (they're just painted on right now) and fine tuning textures. This is based on a Jason Chan concept that I really like, and I'll post that when she's finally done. Lots more tweaking ahead, and hair too. Fun, fun.

The face for a character I'm currently working on. This came about a lot faster after the R&D with the previous face. Texturing and shader work still wip, and a day's worth of work so far. Taking a break from the face and working on the body now, it's amazing how major glitches stop being apparent when you stare at the same thing for a few hours.

Marmoset Toolbag is proprietary game engine developed by 8 Monkey Labs. They've made it available for public use and it's a great way to preview your asset in an engine and fix errors in the textures. It's quite user-friendly once you figure out how to get it working, and has some nice post effects. So here's Hush, via Marmoset Toolbag.

An unfortunate incident involving Disk Cleanup wiped out tons of my older data, including improved Hush textures, Beastie and Bats. I have to redo Bats and work on the texture again. Oh well. Fortunately Black Mask survived the catastrophe, and is coming along nicely. I'll post some pics over the weekend.

Meanwhile, at home I've finished a joint based facial setup for Hush. It took me a while, but it seems to be working fairly well.

I was recently lucky enough to pick up 'The Cinematic Art of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King' artbook. It's hard to read the book without wanting to do something in that style. This started out as a sketch I made in an airport. I thought it'd be cool to make my version of a lesser known DC comic villain as my first game character model. So here's Hush. I've spent quite a bit of time on him now, these are some older concepts and WIP images. He went through a lot of changes, as you can see.

This was an entry for the Unearthly Challenge Contest at gameartisans.org. This was created by David Emiliano Jimenez (www.pixelsinthemaking.com) and me. We had a to make a whole story up for the environment. A ton of fun to do, as well as a great learning experience.

We split the modeling and texturing work right down the middle (literally - I did most of the stuff to the left of the train, he did the stuff on the right - he modeled the train and I textured it. I did the church and the props on the big grey cylinder. Rendering and Lighting was done by David in VRay and 3D Studio Max.

Software I used: Maya, XSI, ZBrush, Photoshop.

Here's a modeling and texturing test I did for the company where I'm currently employed. They gave me a rough concept and asked me to flesh out the details. I used XSI for modeling, Maya for lighting and texturing and Mental Ray for rendering.
